About the Author
He spent years chasing the milestones he was told would make life finally make sense. The State of Becoming is what he learnt when they didn’t.
The Author
Umang Gandecha builds international partnerships for a living. His career has taken him across the United Kingdom, China and the Middle East, and it still keeps him travelling.
Those years left him convinced that some of life’s most useful lessons are found not only in books, but in people, places and the experiences that change us. The State of Becoming draws on them, and on a long habit of watching how the people around him handle change.
His Story
Growing up, success seemed to have a fixed shape: the right career, security, status. Yet he kept noticing that some people who had reached it still seemed quietly unfulfilled.
Living in China and travelling across Asia showed him other ways of living, and other ways of measuring a meaningful life.
For years he chased the titles, the recognition, the next deadline and the next flight. From the outside it looked like progress.
When he finally reached the top of the mountain he had spent years climbing, he felt breathless, and unsure he recognised the person standing there.
“It is far better to climb slowly up the right mountain than quickly up the wrong one.” From Chapter One, Swimming to Shore
Why He Wrote the Book
What does it truly mean to live a meaningful life?
That question surfaced during one of the most reflective periods of Umang’s life. He began writing his thoughts down with no plan to share them. Over time, the notes grew into a book.
He wrote it for anyone who is no longer who they were, but not yet who they are becoming, and who suspects that feeling is not a failure.
Moments Along the Way
My hope is not that this book provides all the answers, but that it encourages you to ask better questions, embrace uncertainty, and recognise that becoming is a lifelong journey.
